Payrolling your nanny
If you choose to pay your emergency nanny directly, you are responsible for paying her income tax and National Insurance
When you book an emergency nanny you'll be presented with two options:
Payrolled by Parent - This is the default option and means you'll be responsible for the nanny's tax and NI
Payrolled by Nanny Agency - You can select for the nanny agency to payroll the nanny. This works out a little more expensive but means you don't have to worry about sorting out their tax and NI.
If you choose to payroll the nanny
The government has announced punitive measures aimed at parents who pay their nanny 'cash in hand' in order to avoid paying the nanny's income tax and National Insurance.
These measures apply to emergency nannies also.
By choosing to pay your emergency nanny directly, you are responsible for paying his/her income tax and National Insurance for the hours worked.
Depending on how much you are paying them, you may also be liable for employer's National Insurance.
